VarTec's Undisclosed Minimal Requirement
Attention: 10-10-297 Users! The "Revolutionary Low Rate" of 3 cents/minute that brought you to VarTec now comes with additional baggage. Besides a 39 cent connection fee on every call, you are also required to spend a minimum of $5.00 per month. It's one thing to require minimal billing, but not to inform customers (who are already paying outrageous connection fees plus a monthy recovery fee) is really lousy. Minimal requirements and reoccurring monthly fees are an unwelcome trend in long distance. Even with acceptance of the inevitable, it is highly irritating that some carriers fail to disclose new terms to existing or potential customers. VarTec's webpage( http://www.vartec.com/EN/Products/LD/3cent.asp), for example, does not reveal the $5 minimum. A friend of mine, who noticed the fee on his bill, tipped me off to this new policy. I had to call VarTec and ask a rep very specific questions to get this information.
Someone like me, who rarely makes long distance calls, didn't mind paying a connection fee because my bills are usually less than $5 anyway. Those days are over! I'm looking for a new dial-around without connection fees or minimal requirements. So far, the Dial Uno "cerca" plan(http://www.dialuno.com/) has promise. The state-to-state rate is 6.9/minute, with no per call connection fees, minimal requirements, or monthly fees. This service also has great international rates. Another good option is Everdial Around (http://www.everdial.net/). Their state-to-state rate is just 5.5 cents/minute, with a 99 cent monthly fee and no minimal requirement. Low rates, like VarTec's 3 cents/minute, are incredibly appealing. Unfortunately, this "revolutionary" rate isn't so exciting when tacked with extra fees and requirements.

I am NOT a user of 1010 service, however, I have been attempting to have a repair made to my elderly mother's service. Vartec promises to call within 24 hours. This does not happen. When you get to the end of the voice message, you must leave specific data such as telephone number, telephone number called, time of day call was made and date of call. AT&T will not make repairs to Vartec's long distance service. I'm short of contacting the attorney general's office to report this situation. Her current AT&T phone number does not appear on caller ID, but a Vartec number does. AT&T worked 2.5 weeks on this problem before it was determined the issue originated with Vartec. Vartec does not respond. Anyone had similar issues using Vartec?
VarTec attached itself as our long distance company three times now, despite our objections and protestations. AT+T refuses to do anything to help on our behalf, but they are willing to pass along VarTec's bogus charges on their ( AT+T's) bills. I have tried to reach VarTec by phone so many times now I've lost track of how many - each time I've eventually been disconnected - after holding for long periods of time, punching this number and that number; it would seem that this company does not wish to take responsibility for its actions; nor does it wish to even deal with a former customer who no longer wishes to be affiliated with them. Despite AT+T's obvious affiliation w/VarTec and willingness to bill customers on VT's behalf, AT+T will do absolutely nothing to remedy this situation and to help us do away with these bogus charges. According to one customer service person at AT+T, a long distance carrier can attach itself to any phone line which has not chosen another long distance carrier. This is absolutely not okay. Anyone with plans to go to the Atty General, let me know. I'm sick of this corporate crime - and I'm disgusted with the copious amounts of time consumers must take in order to simply attempt to have their voices heard, and most often, to no avail.

I have NEVER heard of VerTec Long Distance..not been associated with them...I have gotten no where with anyone that I call whether the collection agency that VerTec uses or even when I call Vertec and speak to 5 ppl. This is highly frustarting and criminal...Anyone have suggestions?
